"My Vision for the Jewish Future?"
My vision for the Jewish future, as an African-American Christian, who formerly worked every day in the Jewish community, may NOT be much different than yours...!
"Vision" inherently references the 'bigger picture' of what our perception and perspective allows us to "see" and "be". Hopefully, with a goal of playing a key role in helping to bring the vision of all of our hearts to pass; my contribution as an "outsider" in certain respects - does not limit the impact of my intentional investment amongst Jews!
I'm sure you're wondering, 'How could this be?'...'You're NOT Jewish?'
Well - my connection to the Jewish world is founded in my early upbringing, but more importantly in the historical significance of Jewishness, upon my life, the world abroad - and in the life of every true Christian that honors TORAH, the Prophets, etc. - and, Jesus Christ - Our Messiah!
When I envision "community" from a global perspectve, I see the rich heritage and common-unity amidst our diversity; even amongst Jews and Christians in Los Angeles and in other parts of the world.
I'm intrigued by a people (in my opinion) who have suffered more than any other ethnic group in recorded history, and still possess as strong a commitment to tikkun olam - "repairing the world"; to their Jewish identity; and to their Jewish community, which is strangely peculiar and powerful; and that's why I'm so honored to serve.
I am also blessed to experience the unflinching resolves of the Jews, whose identity and legacy is deeper than the winds of changing times or the subsequent challenges that are associated with the extremism and hatred of terrorists and fundamentalist that in every respect, are diabolical and unfounded.
"Why don't I go and help my 'own people and community', because the jewish future is about Jews helping Jews?"
When I help the Jewish community through my prayers, giving and service, I am "ensuring the Jewish future" and making the world a safer place - according to the biblical worldview and unchanging covenant of G-d; which I believe in and concur with, wholeheartedly!
"My community" of African-Americans is also strengthened by my proper representation in my faith, for my family and in my profession; through the heartfelt investment I make in at-risk youth; and by me choosing "not" to forget or ignore history - so I do not repeat it foolishly, and in turn show dishonor for my ancestors that have passed on.
By "standing on their shoulders" with the dignity and capacity to lead, I am ensuring that God's Covenant Promises to the Jews, and my love for my own community is realized in my generation, no matter "who" has a problem with it!
It is my prayer that what I've witnessed modeled amongst the Jews, becomes a contagious reality amongst African-Americans - and I believe it definitely will, in time! WS-3
